Campus Life this month honors Harry P. Durkin '53, recipient of the Alumni Association's Rosenthal Award. From Alumni, The Newsletter for Notre Dame Alumni.

 Harry P. Durkin '53 will be presented the Rosenthal Award at the Golden Jubilee class dinner during Reunion 2003. A native of Newark NJ, Harry attended Notre Dame on a full baseball scholarship. After graduation, he signed a professional baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers and played professional ball for six years while attending Seton Hall Law School off season. He received his law degree in 1960 and was a distinguished trial lawyer in New Jersey for 26 years. His skill as a litigator was recognized when he was asked to teach a course in trial techniques to other lawyers at the Institute of Continuing Education. Harry and his wife, Alice, owned Durkin's Mountain Inn, a 400-seat restaurant/catering business in West Orange NJ.

 
Harry served Notre Dame as president of the New Jersey Alumni Club for six years, before moving to Florida. Harry accepted the presidency of the ND Club of Fort Lauderdale in the late 1980s and invigorated the club with his energy and tenacity. The club won several Alumni Association awards during his eight-year presidency, including Club of the Year and the prestigious Lennon Award. Harry received the club's Award of the Year in 1993 and was named club exemplar in 1997. He went on to represent Region 17 on the Alumni Association's Board of Directors for three years. Harry currently represents the Alumni Association as regional director of ND's FIRST (Fighting Irish Resource Service Team) and organizes the Tax Assistance Program for the Fort Lauderdale Club. His fund-raising skills have benefitted the club and Catholic parishes in the Fort Lauderdale area. Harry and Alice have four children: Danny, Marty, Mary Ann, and Hap '94.
