Speaking of the lateral pass of "Pop" Warner's team, Rockne said, "That pass of Pop's was the greatest scoring play I've ever seen. Either he scored on it or we did."

Rockne had some good stories on the officials. One was that his team was beginning to note the apparent bias of the referee, when he dispelled all doubt about the matter when reaching a fumbled ball under a big pile up, the referee shouted: "Our Ball!"

A radio announcer once asked Rockne where he'd like to coach if he left Notre Dame. "Sing Sing," was the quick reply, "the alumni never come back."
