Lou Holtz told this story to his team before the 1988 Notre Dame - Penn State game, when heavy rains were predicted:

"You may remember the old cartoon where there's a football game going on and it's sunny on one side of the line of scrimmage and raining on the other side. The coach on the rainy side says, 'That is just one of the things that I don't like about playing Notre Dame.'

One from Rock:

Rockne could be ferocious when demonstrating combat tactics. "Once he was upset by my execution of a half-spinner sneak play," Chet Grant [quarterback in 1920] recalled. "Rock took it himself on the next play and gained five yards. He just turned back and looked at me as if to say: 'There! That's how it's done!' I just looked back at him with a look that "said: 'Hell, I expected you to go all the way for a touchdown!'

Bob Cahill worked for forty-eight years in the athletic department at Notre Dame, twenty-eight of them as ticket manager, which is a thankless job. Cahill was asked how he would spend a post - retirement football weekend:

"I'm going to enjoy myself. Stay up late with friends on Friday night. Go to the pre-game brunch at the Morris Inn. I'll enjoy the game and a few tailgate parties, and have a restful Sunday. Then on Monday I'll sit down at the typewriter and type a long letter to the ticket manager complaining about the lousy seats I had for the game."
